Preparation for the TOEFL, TOEIC
and Cambridge ESOL exams

The TOEIC and TOEFL are exams that have been developed by Educational Testing Services (ETS) in the United States and are widely used world wide for testing the ability of non-native speakers to use and understand English at a university or as an employee of an international corporation.

TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) is the most widely used test of English skills in the international business community. The exam measures students' ability to answer multiple-choice questions after reading and listening to English. TOEIC is used mostly by corporations and is particularly popular in Japan, Korea and Taiwan. TOEIC has no writing or speaking component, which makes it easier to correct and, therefore, less expensive.

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is used to test university students who apply to an English speaking university. It covers a wider range of vocabulary than TOEIC, has multiple-choice questions similar to TOEIC, but also tests writing and speaking ability. It is a more expensive exam than the TOEIC, but it adds an additional dimension.

The Cambridge ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) services have developed a variety of exams for testing English competency for a large number of professions and purposes. Their IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is widely used and recognized world wide and is similar in scope and method to the TOEFL exam.

WHY SHOULD I TAKE THESE EXAMS?
Any university student who wishes to study in an English speaking university anywhere in the world must demonstrate his or her competency in English.  Both the TOEFL and IELTS are recognized and accepted by thousands of universities the world over.  The TOEIC exam is often required by corporations as part of the hiring process.  Successfully passing these exams is proof of your ability to use English as a student in university courses or as an employee in an international corporation.

WHO IS IT FOR?
For anyone who can allocate about 2 to 3 hours of English study during the week (50-minute lesson + 1½ hours of homework). You should already have a basic knowledge of English.

HOW DO I KNOW WHICH EXAM I SHOULD SIT FOR?
Your teacher will be able to assess your language skills and will advise you as to which exam you will need to take.  Those students who are studying American English should prepare for the TOEFL or the TOEIC exam and those who are learning British English would be best to prepare for the IELTS exam.

WHAT IS THE STRUCTURE OF THE EXAMINATIONS?
The TOEIC exam tests your ability both to read and listen to passages in English and to then answer multiple choice questions.
The TOEFL and the IELTS exams both have the additional components where writing and speaking ability is tested.

The exams must be taken in an approved testing center.  They are all timed examinations and are supervised very closely by the examination center staff.  The TOEFL exam can be taken in one of two different formats: the TOEFL IBT (Internet Based Test), which is taken over the internet and the TOEFL PBT (Paper Based Test).  The format you will take depends on the testing center location.  The following links provide more information about the exams themselves and each site has links on how to find the examination centre that is closest to you:
